Body mass index or BMI is a measure of identifying a person as obese, overweight, underweight, or as a person who has an ideal body weight. The formula for computing the body mass index of a person was invented by a Belgian statistician named Adolphe Quatelet who gave the formula its original name, the Quatelet Index. BMI is also oftetimes referred to as body mass indicator as it can measure how grossly a person’s obesity case is.

It is recommended that all should know how to compute for their body mass index especially for those who are in the need to know and keep track of how they are doing in terms of their weight. Individuals struggling with weight issues can find BMI calculation a very useful thing for them to do. The good news is it is very easy to compute and only requires a person’s height and weight measurements.

Two known ways of calculating BMIs are the imperial method and metric method. In the imperial method, what you need to know is your height in inches and your weight in pounds. First, multiply your weight to a standard value which is in this case is the number 703. The product is then divided by the value of your height multiplied to itself. Let’s take for an example a person who stands 5 feet tall and weighs 210 pounds. First we must convert the height in inches. Five feet is equal to 60 inches. So the values are 210 lbs for the weight and 60 in for the height. We multiply the 210 to 703. Afterwards, we divide the product to the product of 60 in by 60 in leading us to the body mass index value.

On the other hand, the metric method only differs in small exceptions with the imperial method. The values needed for height and weight are required in units kilograms and meters. Also, the metric method does not require the standard number 703 as multiplier to the weight measurement. The weight in kilograms is simply divided into the same person’s height which is expressed in meters and, again, multiplied to itself.

Given that there are two known methods of how to obtain a person’s body mass index or BMI, more people prefer the imperial method and it’s much simpler, as they claim it. Although they are two different methods, they of course derive the same values. It would just depend on the person who is obtaining the body mass index which of the two he or she will be using. Sometimes people decide which method by choosing the type of measurement that they are already accustomed to. For example, since Europeans generally use the metric system of measurement, they tend to choose the metric method of BMI calculation.

Whatever method any given person is going to use, it really depends on them. The important thing now is to know how to interpret the results. As guidance, be thankful if what you have calculated falls between the range 18.5 and 24.5 because you are considered normal. However, if you already reached 30 or more, you should get up on your feet right away because you have a lot of flabs to lose since you are already considered obese.
