Caffeine and ephedra are stimulants, which are often found in weight loss supplements. But there are also stimulant-free diet pills, alternative choices for people who cannot bear the effects of caffeine and the like substances.

What are stimulants?

Stimulants refer to drugs and medications designed to affect activity in the central nervous system. In other words, stimulants can trigger a sudden spike in energy levels, making you more attentive and alert. With these, your blood pressure rises, heart rate increases, and breathing speeds up. That explains the jitters you may feel after drinking coffee.

Traditionally, ephedra, caffeine and other stimulating substances were exploited for their therapeutic effects on lung conditions. They were even used for some neurological disorders.

In light of their ability to work up energy levels, which may lead to faster metabolism, stimulants have found their way into many diet supplements. For instance, caffeine has been a fixture in many diet supplements indicated for overweight and obesity. Drug manufacturers have maximized the fat burning effects of stimulants – for what they are worth – so that you don’t have to chug down a thousand cups of coffee.

Nowadays, stimulant diet pills are likely contain any of these three:

1. Caffeine

By far, caffeine is the most ubiquitous ingredient in stimulating diet pills. It is often derived from the beans and leaves of the coffee plant and, to a limited degree, cocoa. But companies have always fallen back on other sources:

  • green teaCamellia sinensis or green tea is one of the best-known and most prolific sources of caffeine. Some of the best green teas grow in India and Sri Lanka. Caffeine found in tea is called theine.
  • guarana – Found mostly in Brazil, guarana berries make for a strong stimulant. The caffeine found in guarana is known as guaranine.
  • Kola nut – This is none other than the source of caffeine in Coca-Cola. It is the seed of its namesake tree, which is endemic to Africa.
  • Yerba maté – Aside from theine and guaranine, caffeine may also be called mateine, when it is found in Yerba maté a.k.a. Paraguayan tea. Like green tea and coffee, Yerba mate contains a lot of caffeine.
  • Yaupon Holly – Also called Cassina, the Yaupon Holly or Ilex vomitoria grows in southeastern United States. Native North Americans have long indicated the holly for a wide gamut of conditions.

2. Ephedrine alkaloids

Ephedrine alkaloids are stimulants derived from a plant called ephedra, known among Chinese herbalists as ma huang. Historically, the Chinese have used ephedra to treat many respiratory concerns.

Ephedra and its alkaloids, like caffeine, were widely used to make ephedra based diet supplements. Until, that is, their banning in America; the FDA had linked them to serious health hazards. Apparently, ephedra can not only increase your heart rate. It can also cause heart disease.

3. Synephrine

Synephrine seems like a safer counterpart of ephedrine. This stimulant is found mostly in bitter orange (Citrus aurantium).

Stimulant-free diet supplements

If a diet pill comes with claims about increasing energy or boosting metabolism, chances are it is a stimulant. Not all stimulants are unsafe though. Caffeine-containing diet supplements are relatively innocuous, for example. However, other stimulants are indubitably risky. Ephedra is one case in point.

In general, too much caffeine, ephedrine, or synephrine may elevate blood pressure to dangerous levels. The possibility of a fatal reaction to whichever kind of stimulant is very real. At any rate, stimulants can induce side effects, e.g. anxiousness, dizziness, headaches, insomnia, mood swings, and nausea. You may think these risks are worth a slim figure. But no, stimulant diet pills are yet to be proven as effective fat burners.

Choose stimulant-free diet pills then. Check if the product contains stimulants such as those listed above. If they don’t, then it is likely stimulant-free. Like all products, efficacy varies from one stimulant-free diet supplement to another. But at least you’re safe.
